The United Nations refers to the youth as ‘torch-bearers” of the 2030 Agenda for sustainable development.
The youth have an essential role to play, both as beneficiaries of actions and policies under the Agenda and as partners in its implementation.
It is only if they are educated, correctly skilled and healthy, then can they make their contribution and play their role in sustainable growth and development.
Limitations have been identified, strong & effective efforts have been made to empower & support the youth but there is still a lot more that needs to be done.

Successfully Invests in the Next Generation
Five days of learning, leadership, opportunity and hope for township youth
Care Enough To Do Something (TDS) successfully hosted its annual Youth Empowerment Winter School from 29 June to 03 July 2026 at the University of KwaZulu-Natal’s Westville Campus.
The five-day residential programme brought together 150 high-performing Grade 11 learners from 15 schools in KwaMashu, Inanda and uMlazi. It provided learners with access to knowledge, mentorship, health services, digital skills, career guidance and information about tertiary education and funding opportunities.
The Winter School was designed to address some of the barriers experienced by young people from township communities, including limited access to career information, professional networks, digital resources, mentorship, psychosocial support and higher education guidance.
Through the programme, learners were encouraged to believe in their potential, take responsibility for their futures and understand that their circumstances do not have to determine their destination.
Provincial education leadership supports the programme
The Winter School opened with words of encouragement and support from the Head of the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Education, Mr Nkosinathi Ngcobo.
His participation reinforced the importance of partnerships between government, schools, higher education institutions, civil society and the private sector in improving learner outcomes and preparing young people for life beyond the classroom.
The engagement also highlighted the value of supporting learners before they enter their final year of schooling. Grade 11 is a critical stage at which learners must strengthen their academic performance, make informed career choices and begin preparing for tertiary education applications.
Minister of Higher Education inspires learners at the Career Expo
A major highlight of the Winter School was the keynote address delivered by the Minister of Higher Education and Training, Hon. Mr Buti Manamela, during the Career Expo.
The Minister encouraged learners to remain committed to their education, explore the different pathways available within the post-school education and training system, and take advantage of opportunities offered by universities, TVET colleges, agricultural colleges, learnerships, apprenticeships and skills development programmes.

We are especially grateful to CRODA South Africa for its valued donation, support and words of encouragement to the learners. The organisation’s contribution demonstrated the importance of corporate participation in education, youth development and future skills preparation.
Our heartfelt appreciation goes to the University of KwaZulu-Natal for hosting the programme at its Westville Campus and providing access to facilities, academic expertise, computer laboratories and health-related support. Experiencing a university environment gave learners a tangible sense that higher education is both possible and within their reach.
We thank the Council for the Built Environment for its continued strategic partnership and commitment to exposing learners to careers within the built environment and other scarce-skills professions.
We also acknowledge the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Education, including its provincial and district leadership, for supporting the participation of schools and learners and for contributing educational expertise to the programme.
Special appreciation is extended to MUNSOFT (Pty) Ltd and Mvokoqa Solutions for leading the digitalisation and technology programme. Their practical sessions on digital learning tools, artificial intelligence, coding and software fundamentals enabled learners to move beyond theory and gain hands-on exposure to the technologies shaping the future.
We further thank all speakers, exhibitors, tertiary institutions, government departments, health professionals, educators, volunteers, school principals and corporate partners whose time, expertise and resources made this programme possible.
A holistic five-day empowerment programme
The Winter School addressed the development of the whole learner through five interconnected programme themes.
The first day focused on mental health, self-awareness and gender-based violence. Learners engaged with specialists on exam anxiety, mental wellbeing, substance abuse, crime prevention, personal resilience and access to support services.
The second day focused on health and nutrition. Learners received information on the relationship between nutrition and academic performance, healthy food choices, sexual and reproductive health, menstrual health, dental care and positive development for young men. Eye-health screening was also made available.
The third day focused on financial literacy, technology and digitalisation. Learners were introduced to responsible financial management, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, digital learning tools, coding and software fundamentals. Practical exposure at the UKZN computer laboratories enabled learners to develop confidence in using technology for education and future employment.
The fourth day was dedicated to career exposure and skills development. Professionals from different sectors shared their personal journeys, challenges and achievements. The Career Expo allowed learners to engage directly with organisations and gain a clearer understanding of the opportunities available across various industries.
The final day focused on tertiary education guidance. Universities, TVET colleges, agricultural colleges, funding bodies and the Central Applications Office guided learners on entry requirements, application processes, programme selection and financial support.

His presence was especially meaningful for learners who may be the first members of their families to pursue higher education. The Minister’s engagement demonstrated that national leaders recognise their potential and are committed to supporting young people as they transition from school into further education, training and employment.
The Career Expo connected learners with employers, government entities, professional bodies, tertiary institutions and industry representatives. Learners received information about careers, subject requirements, qualifications, scarce skills, bursaries, learnerships and workplace opportunities.

South Africa is facing a youth unemployment crisis, worsened by weak transitions from school to work, especially in township communities.
Yet we are sitting on a goldmine of talent, held back only by lack of access and opportunity.
We developed six programmes, particularly, our Empowerment Programme, to make a meaningful impact in young peoples' lives.
Our programmes are about unlocking that talent and reshaping the narrative of what is possible for young Black learners from disadvantaged areas.

Health & Nutrition: Promoting access to nutritious food and communal gardens to ensure learners and communities are healthy and able to thrive.
Community Upliftment: Training community health workers, establishing communal gardens, and running workshops that build stronger, healthier communities.
