Umkhambathini Youth Empowerment Summer School
130 Grade 11 learners from 13 high schools from Mkhambathini local municipality were empowered







Health Day - Your health matters
On 04 - 06 December 2024, we facilitated the Mkhambathini Youth Empowerment summer school which included 130 Grade 11 learners from 13 High Schools in the municipality. The Summer School focused on learners interested in pursuing Local Economic Development (LED) careers.
The first day of the three-day youth empowerment summer school focused of setting the scene and focusing on dealing with all health (mental and physical health) because a healthy body and a healthy mind are critical for individual well-being and success.
The Director of Community Services at the Municipality informed the learners about the holistic long-term support that the municipality offers to young people in its jurisdiction.
The Department of Health was there to do free health screening for all the learners and educated the learners about knowing your health status, teenage pregnance and HIV/AIDS.
Our registered dietician also educated the learners on the importance of healthy eating and easy ways to eat healthily.
The department of social development also engaged the learners on support available to households in need.
Our COO - Dr. Nzimande educated the learners on what is Gender-Based Violence (GBV), the definition of rape, and what to do should you be a victim.
Career Day
Lifeline-Pietermaritzburg educated the learners about mental health and its impact on academic performance and well-being in general, as well as the available support.
Inkunzi Isematholeni (Ms. Zinhle Ngcobo) also offered words of encouragement and educated the learners about substance abuse, its consequences and available support for those scenarios.
GCIS (Mr. Mlu Dlamini) educated the learners about social media and bullying.
Two young entrepreneurs (Ms. Nkazimulo Nkabini from NKD Group & Mr. Sbonga Shelembe from Khabahle Kreations) running very successful businesses share their journey and experiences, and offered words of encouragement to the learners.
EDTEA (Ms. Dudu Nkosi) also educated the learners about career and business opportunities in tourism.









Accessing Tertiary Institutions
Day 3 was all about the next steps post matric.
The DoE, Circuit Manager: Mid-Illovo (Ms. NPZ Hlela) gave a powerful talk and words of encouragement to the learners.
UKZN (Ms. Londeka Mbatha) empowered the learners about how to apply to study your preferred career choice and what are the requirements to study the various fields.
NYDA (Mr. Khumbulani Shange) was also present to inform the learners about bursaries, funding and career opportunities that are available for young people.
The Mkhambathini Mayor (Cllr. Ntombela) also shared words of encouragement and informed the learners of the municipalities continued commitment to support and empower the youth of Mkhambathini.
The learners left the summer school feeling empowered, hopeful and confident about their futures, thanks to the Municipalities commendable initiative that will develop the community of Mkhambathini.
