WELCOME

DAY 1- MENTAL HEALTH
Here are some highlights of the first day of our Winter School where we were discussing all things Mental Health.
The learners were all excited to be part of this session and were very engaged.
The Social Worker from Lifeline-Durban really had the learners engaged on Mental health support.
DAY 2 - HEALTH AND NUTRITION DAY
Our Day 2 was exceptional, informative and very interactive. The learners totally loved the session.
Dr. Cyril Nkabinde & Dr. Moffat had a very interactive talk with the learners on HIV/AIDS:
how it spreads, how to prevent contracting it and how to manage it once infected.
The learners loved the ability to anonymously ask medical questions to the doctors.
This was followed by a healthy debate on HIV/AIDS, between boys and girls.
We also had a dietician talking to the learners about the importance of healthy eating and how to eat healthily.
The learners totally enjoyed the session, although, it seems like they might need more convincing to eat their vegetables.
DAY 3 - GENDER-BASED VIOLENCE (GBV)
Our Day 3 was intense but very informative for the learners because we were discussing
key issues related to Gender-Based Violence (GBV):
what GBV looks like, the definition of rape, what should you do if you or
someone you know becomes a victim of GBV and the support that is available for GBV victims.
Ms. Siya Madlopha from Lifeline-Durban engaged the learners at length on these issues.
We also had an ex-convict who has turned his life around and is now going around communities & schools telling them what it’s like in prison and why they don’t want to go there.
#Crime Doesn’t Pay.
We also got an opportunity inform the community of Inanda about our program
through the interview held with Inanda FM.
DAY 4 - CAREER EXPO
Day 4 was our Career Expo day where numerous companies, SETAs & professionals were invited to exhibit and share information with the learners regarding career opportunities and bursaries on offer for the learners now and upon completion on their studies.
The following SETAs were present:
FASSET (Finance & Accounting), CETA (Construction), MQA (Mining Qualification), WRSETA (Wholesale & Retail), and HWSETA (Health & Welfare).
KZN Ezemvelo, EThekwini Metro municipality, SAICA, & ACCA were also present.
The Council for the Built Environment (CBE) was present, along with its 8 Councils.
The learners totally loved the exhibitions as they received valuable information and promotional materials such as
pencil cases, backpacks, bags and stationary.
The learners also received words of encouragement & support from the KZN MEC for Social Development.
We also had various professionals sharing their personal journeys & experiences in their professions.
These included the following:
1. Charted Accountant (CA) - Ms. Nonku Shezi
2. Advocate Senzo Ngwane
3. Electrical Engineer & Businessman - Mr. Sibusiso Mncube
4. Construction project manager - Ms. Tshegofatso Khampepe
DAY 5 -TERTIARY EDUCATION
Day 5 (our last day for this winter school) was filled with emotions. Emotions of anxiety, relief, excitement and a tinge of sadness.
This emanates from the steps and tips to make Maths easy for the learners given by the very experienced former Maths teacher, Mr. Michael Atkins, to Ms. Nompilo Dlamini from the University of Zululand, who shared the processes for applications and the requirements for the different qualifications.
This was followed by a similar talk by Mr. Msizi Dimba from the University of KwaZulu Natal (UKZN) who not only informed the learners about the qualifications entry requirements but also shared how learners can still pursue their desired profession,
should they not meet the requirements, although the completion time might be delayed.
He also shared, with the learners, how they can access NSFAS to fund their tertiary studies.
He also demonstrated how learners can create their profiles on the NSFAS website.
We also has other professionals from the Construction environment speaking to the learners about their journey to date.
For fun, we had a dance competition amongst the five schools and the learners totally loved it, and so did the judges.
The Chief Transformation Officer from CBE (our sponsor for this winter school) gave a wonderful speech encouraging
the learners to work hard, be disciplined and pursue their dreams.
In closing, a number of the learners expressed their appreciation for this programme and winter school,
and indicated the impact that it has made in their lives.
